Severe Risk

Well just put me in the red section: Severe Risk.

I'm barely proceeding with Severe Risk. I went on a mini "date" with the 24-year old. It was a surprise to me.

It's a little hard to accurately describe the night because, well, he is so much younger than I am and he uses a lot of slang.

But being the mature, achem, woman that I am and the secure woman I am at my age I just told him to knock it off. He laughed.

We started the evening by going to Starbucks as I suggested we have coffee and talk after I finished working Tuesday night.

Now things didn't start off so well for this youngin' as he didn't even buy me my coffee. I thought to myself WTF is this?!?!?

But we sat down and I don't know what was more steaming, the coffee or me about his lack of open wallet for a cheap cup of coffee.

But your girl Lauren is witty and took care of this when the moment presented itself.

So we were talking and he was telling me about his cats and how he takes care of them and loves them. He knows I have cats. He wanted to impress me. Those types of things I am pretty forgiving about with guys...let them ramble and give them slack. They're nervous and want to impress. No worries.

Then out of no where he goes from that subject to asking me, "Um, so , uh, when was the last date you were on?"

Insert record screech sound here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just looked straight at him and said, "WOW that was a huge jump in subject. Especially from a guy who didn't even buy me my coffee."

And if this guy's skin tone wasn't a really beautiful hispanic tan, you would have seen him turn a huge bright red. And he smiled. And he back peddled and I laughed my ass off.

He told me he wanted to take me to Juniors but I suggested Starbucks and and and...well he knew he screwed up. So he started saying things about next time...

Here's clue number 2 that this guy is full of shit...BACK PEDDLING when confronted with information a woman is giving him...changing his story. SCREEEEEEETCH!

Skip forward...I was pretty clear about my conservative views and I told him that I'm confortable with who I am and my views and it's not going to change.

So past all that stuff...here are a few funnier highlights of the things that came out of his mouth...well meaning of course:

"You look good for your age."
"The age difference doesn't bother me." (Sure little tyke!)

"My friend went out with an older woman and he told me how great it was because he learned so much from her."

"My grandfather is 77."
"My mother is 41." (she had him at 16) YIKES!

OK after that last one I put my head in my hands and just started to laugh. I am 13 years older than this guy and only 4 years younger than his mother. OK OK, she had him very young...a baby herself but still. OMG!

Now you know you're in trouble when you've written a blog post and edited it at least three times in only four days about ONE DATE. At first he seemed like a very sweet young man. But the more I think about his words and actions I realize that he's hiding something and that something can't be good.

I told him that I am not looking to be someone's teacher or mother, but to be equals and enjoy my time with the other person.

So how did that night end?

He walked me to the subway and talked with me a little bit before I left to go home. He asked me out for Valentine's Day and I said yes. He reached in to kiss me goodnight and I gave him my cheek but he snuck a kiss right on my lips before I could say yes or no.

Have you ever spent time with someone and heard things that didn't quite sit right with you but weren't horrible offenses? And after some days, you've had time to sift through those things and realize that something is just slightly off? Well that is where I stand with this particular person.

There's been way too much texting...no phone calls and I caught the bastard sending texts to me that he surely meant to send to another girl. I sent him a reply late last night as that's when this baby sends most of his texts to me. Here's what it said, "Ooooops. Wrong girl. BUSTED!"

I removed his number from my phone and I'm ignoring his texts. Maybe he'll get a clue.??

Hair Today Gone Tomorrow

OMG! I had beautiful hair on Tuesday morning and a disaster in the afternoon.

I went to my colorist with the following instructions: "I want brown hair. Chocolate brown. BROWN. I do not want black or even close to it."

She insisted that I keep the damn dye on my head 45 minutes after she finished applying. When she rinsed I thought I was going to strangle her.

I looked like some freak goth kid. HOLY CRAP!

She tried to back peddle stating some lie that she said she had to go black because of my highlights and I cut her off!

I pulled the ends of my long NOW BLACK hair over to the swatch she showed me she was mixing and screamed, "Does this look like that color to you!?"

Quickly she made me do another full head of two blonde colors mixed together to lighted the BLACK on my head.

By the time I was done I was still black, just slightly less offensively black and my scalped was fried.

I'm itching to this damn day.

I calmed myself down and said I needed some time in my own home to think about this and call her back.

And I did just that. And told her she had to fix the color.

She charged me a lot of money for this damn mistake!

I did some research and the good news is that I found a product called Color Oops that gently removes the color from your bad hair dye job. It cost me another $20 and I got it at the drug store on my own.

I brought it to the salon on Wednesday night and we did two swatch tests as part of my hair had highlights and the other did not before this mess. It seemed ok. And we proceded with the full application.

I insisted that it not stay on for more than 15 minutes from the time she started the application.

I couldn't believe she started to argue with me that it should be 15 minutes from the time she was done with my full head. NO WAY! I just cut her off.

At 15 minutes we did the rinse and wash and another rinse for 15 minutes as instructed and another wash. Then I did a deep conditioning for 20 minutes with a cap.

When done the color was a nice warm brown...close to what I originally asked for.

Crisis averted.

Shitty hair color gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cruel and Unusual Punishment

I think we've forgotten what really happened!

The fact that the thugs at Guantanamo are not wanted else where should indicate that there is reason for them being there.

The scum of the earth held at Guantanamo are not from Iraq. No matter what you thought of Bush and our involvement in the Iraq War, the scum at Guantanamo are from Afgahnistan. They are Al Queda. They ARE the ones that did this to us.

It's time to speak up LOUDLY to our fellow neighbors and our government about this FACT. We were attacked unprovoked. We have to start defending our good culture properly.

Appeasing terrorists has NEVER worked and will not work now. Just who is HE protecting and appeasing by closing Guantanamo? How is anything that is going on down there to the people who did THIS to us going to make our standing in the world better? And with whom will our standing be better with? Terrorist nations and terrorists sponsored by those nations?

Wake up out of the fodder please. I'm begging you.

Make sure you watch at 1:13 in folks. THIS is cruel and unusual punishment and YOUR new President it the appeaser of all time.

Go to 1:38 in and watch these people's last moments. WATCH IT! WATCH IT! Watch the true cruel and unusual punishment of INNOCENT CIVILIANS MURDERED for Islamic ideology.

My Emily

http://canubapartofmylife.blogspot.com/2008/01/in-memorium-of-emily.html Please visit the original post to see lovely photos of my beloved Emily. May she be even happier in heaven than she was on this earth. I miss you.

12/01/91 - 01/24/07

I have had the blessing of many cats since the age of 12. I have loved each one in a special way. None has ever touched my heart as Emily did. I adopted her from the NYASPCA ironically on 1/25/92. I had her 15 years. I was only at the ASPCA because I had just picked up Olivia from their Vet after her spaying at six months old. I saw an orange marmalade kitten and wanted it dearly. They told me I had to come back because it wasn't ready for adoption. When I returned the exact day they told me to, I was informed they brought that cat to the North Shore Animal League. I turned to the window kittens and saw the most adorable bunch of gray kittens. One in particular, Emily, was so damn cute. She was so playful and I could just feel her abundant energy. I had to have HER! I had to sit and wait to find out if she was the one kitten a Vet on staff had already picked out for himself. Nope! She was mine. I was handed her, so tiny she fit in my tiny hand and there was still room to see my palm. She just sat there with me. She was comfortable. It was meant to be that I find
her that day.

Take a good look at her baby photos and you will see she had the most adorable and HUGE ears, that were too big in comparison for her tiny head. What you can't see is that she always had the biggest back paws. When she sat they would go sideways out from her. She just was the cutest thing you ever did see! She was so tiny that the mark you will see further down on this post, on her back paw looked like a speck of dirt and I remember trying to wipe it off her thinking that is what it was. She had one of the longest tails ever AND until about one year before she passed on, she used to chase it in circles so she could catch it and clean it. So funny to watch! She also had a mouse toy filled with catnip. I loved watching her take it in her mouth, flip it in the air to throw it and then go catch it and do it again. She just was THE most playful cat I have ever seen.

She was full of fleas and at that time (1992) they sent me home with a special shampoo to bathe her. I thought I was a dead woman with this. (Any of you who have cats will understand that!) Again, this sweet little soul, was so trusting and in love with me, she just sat in my palm as I ran her under the warm water in the tub and watched her turn from the most adorable little kitten to an ugly rat looking thing. (sorry Candace!) Her hair just dripping down and looking boney, she just let me do what needed to be done. I dried her little body off with a towel and she loved it. She ran all over my apartment and played and jumped and leaped and just loved life with me from the start. Poor Olivia, she didn't like this creature and she pounced on her. Those first few days I had to protect Emily many times. But they grew to love each other, so long as Emily knew who was boss!

Emily always wanted to sleep with me. I would put her down on my belly or next to me but she, being the soul that she was, knew how cute she was and that she could get away with anything, would always work her way to my ear. She was weaned too early and decided that she was going to suck on my ear. I used to have a video tape of this. I think sadly I trashed it by accident. The things you miss when a loved one has passed! SIGH!!!! When she started doing this she didn't have her teeth yet. She continued after they came in and I had the scabs on my ears to prove it. I couldn't stop her and it became a running joke. I would show all my friends. I just picked her up and would put her to my ear, like a baby to the momma's teet, and she would latch on and do that thing kitties do with their paws when they are excited, rubbing her scent all over my neck.

Emily was a very social and talkative cat. Those that knew her know she really spoke. You could ask her questions and she would answer you back. If she was hungry and you asked her, "Do you wanna eat?" She would EXCLAIM back at you, "MEEP MEEP MEEP MEEP MEEP!" For this reason I often called her squeaky. Her meow sounded like Beeker from the Muppet Show. (If you are old enough to remember that show you know what I am talking about.) Everyday that I came home from school or work she would run out from where ever she was and greet me and talk to me with that MEEP MEEP MEEP. I could scoop her up and give her lots of lovin'.

Emily LOVED belly rubs and being brushed. If she was hiding somewhere and I wanted her attention, all I had to do was tap that brush and she would come RUNNING! She was really smart and apparently sneaky. I had no idea until she was almost gone just how much she got into things. Since I had two cats I never knew who did what. Emily knew what, "get down, up up, no, come here, do you want to eat?, lay down, belly rubbies, want a treat? and brushies" meant.

She had the most amazing green eyes you will ever see on a cat. I was never able to fully capture it with any of the crummy cameras I owned. Sadly I didn't own my own video camera, like I do now and I don't have those adorable memories preserved as I wish I did. I am capturing as much of Olivia as I can so I don't have the same regrets some day with her. Emily was loved by every friend that ever met her. She had this special personality you just do not see in cats. It was infectious.

She died two years ago today. I miss her and think of her every day.

The Meaning of Kaddish

Having read the translation of the Kaddish Prayer, one should realize that, although Jewish Law requires that the Kaddish be recited during the first eleven months following the death of a loved one by prescribed mourners, and on each anniversary of the death (the "Yahrtzeit"), and by custom in the State of Israel by all Jews on the Tenth of Tevet ("Yom HaKaddish HaKlali'), there is no reference, no word even, about death in the prayer!

The theme of Kaddish is, rather, the Greatness of G-d, Who conducts the entire universe, and especially his most favored creature, each individual human being, with careful supervision. In this prayer, we also pray for peace - from apparently the only One Who can guarantee it - peace between nations, peace between individuals, and peace of mind.

Paradoxically, this is, in fact, the only true comfort in the case of the loss of a loved one. That is, to be able to view the passing of the beloved individual from the perspective that that person's soul was gathered in, so to speak, by the One Who had provided it in the first place.

As Beruriah, the great wife of Rabbi Meir, consoled her husband, upon the death of their two sons, with words to this effect, "A soul is comparable to an object which was given to us - to each individual, to his or her parents and loved ones, to guard and watch over for a limited time. When the time comes for the object to be returned to its rightful owner, should we not be willing to return it? With regard to our sons, let us therefore consider the matter as 'The L-rd gave, and the L-rd took back, may the Name of the L-rd be Blessed!' "

MOURNER'S KADDISH

An English Translation

Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.

May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for usand for all Israel; and say, Amen.He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

Just Call Me Demi

Well I have an itty bitty 24 year old who is interested in me. :) He met me at my night job and has been very chatty with me. Apparently the wooing period for those that are 24 years old is now done through texting.

Say it isn't so! But it is.

When he arrived at the same place I work I did notice him but said nothing. To me he looks even younger than 24. I kidded with the other hens I work with that I think he is 18.

It's funny to be liked and persued by someone so much younger than I. But I can't say I am not liking every moment of this. It's a big boost to my ego to say the least.

He hasn't asked me out yet but I suspect it's coming.

He has made big strides to seek me out and sit with me on breaks. He has told me things about himself that I find intreaging and that I feel we share in common, although he doesn't know that. He let me know how much money he has saved and what his plans are. That's not something a guy does unless he wants you to even consider him in a serious romantic way. This old bird knows that! ;)

I also feel from him a sweetness and honesty that is very rare and that I often do NOT "get" from other men. But of course only time will tell.

He thought I was about 30 and I laughed and showed him the white on the top of my head. He knows my age and said," So what? Haven't you ever heard of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher?"

At least he didn't call me a cougar!

Interview With Nonie Darwish

From the following site:

In her latest book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law, author Nonie Darwish paints a chilling description of what lies ahead for Western civilizations that continue down the road of political correctness and appeasement as Islamic (Shariah) law creeps its way into free societies across the globe. Darwish, who was born in Cairo, and moved as a child to Gaza with her family, was raised Muslim – her father founding Palestinian fedayeen units which launched terrorist raids across Israel’s southern border. When Nonie was only eight, her father was assassinated by the IDF, after which he was recognized as a shahid, or martyr for Islam. Darwish immigrated to the United States in 1978.

Islamic Law and the ensuing threats to Western civilization are subjects Darwish discusses with a passion and knowledge borne only of one who grew up within it can have. Having left Islam as an adult and having converted to Christianity, she has shared her experiences in Islam with her first book, Now They Call Me Infidel. Now with her second book, Cruel and Usual Punishment: The Terrifying Global Implications of Islamic Law, she explains in layman’s terms the meaning of Shariah law and the implications that face those who embrace it. Nonie Darwish visited with FamilySecurityMatters.org to discuss the book:

Renee Taylor for FSM: What are some of the implications for Western civilizations of accepting Shariah law into their societies?

Nonie Darwish: Today, Muslims have moved to Europe, America, Australia and Canada. They argued for Shariah law and got it. In England now, they are practicing marriage and inheritance laws. It is important for the West to realize and understand that Islamic law does not give equal rights to all. It discriminates between men and women. There are laws for Muslims, laws for non-Muslims. Women and non-Muslims have much more oppressive laws, giving Muslim men authority over them. If we allow such laws, we will find ourselves approving discrimination in our society between people. That is totally against Western democracy and values, especially the U.S. Constitution. I wrote this book because it is very important for the West to understand what they allow. Shariah law itself was not part of Islam when Mohammed died. It was created by the Muslim heads of state because Islam was moving very fast to conquer many countries. They needed Islamic law to rule over all these lands. It is inspired by the Koran and by the Hadith sayings of Mohammed. All areas of Islamic society are rooted in Islamic law, which is tyrannical law.

Slavery, for example, has never been abolished by Islam. If you read Muslim Shariah law, it is full of regulation of slaves. Sexual slavery of women captured in war is allowed, which was practiced by Mohammed. Even today, sexual slaves are accepted and all over the Middle East. Honor killings are rooted in Islamic law. For example, the murders for which a Muslim will never have punishment: to kill an apostate, to kill an adulterer – which is usually a woman, and honor killings. If you allow the killings of an apostate or an adulteress woman in the form of vigilante justice under Islamic law, you are endorsing honor killing. There are so many laws you cannot imagine that are brutal and unfair. A woman, for example, cannot divorce her husband, only a man can divorce her. I have an entire chapter in my book about the Muslim marriage contract. All of this is to open the eyes of the West to something totally against their own value system and democracy.

RT: With the world at risk, why do you think other countries are not taking the situation seriously? There seems to be a lot of appeasement.

ND: Unfortunately, there is no united policy across the West with regard to radical Islam. I believe the reason is there are so many Muslim countries around the world and many of them are oil rich and use oil as a weapon blackmailing Western countries. Appease them and assimilate them. Under Shariah, one of the major threats of a Muslim head of state is jihad. There is a law in Shariah law that says the head is to move Muslims to establish their religion. He must organize jihad against non-Muslim countries. They must be conquered. Why the West is in denial, I do not know. That is why I wrote the book, to inform the average Westerner what Shariah is. The book deals with all aspects of Shariah, what jihad is, and the obligations of Muslims to kill Jews and Christians and any non-Muslims in the jihad to who do not accept Islam.

That is why, unfortunately, when a Muslim leader stands up for Israel, he is labeled an apostate because he is doing something against his own Islamic law. A Muslim head of state must continue the Jihad against non-Muslim countries, especially those who neighbor a Muslim country. When President Sadat signed a peace treaty with Israel, he was assassinated. The reason was he violated Islamic law which demanded he be at permanent war with a non-Muslim adjacent state. This is happening everywhere. In India, Kosovo, Chechnya. If the West stays in denial, we will see the same in France.

RT: How can the average citizen get involved in understanding Islamic Law and how it is going to affect them and their way of life?

ND: It is very important that we separate the law of Islam from the religion of Islam. You see, a religion is private. When a minority comes to a country, they have a relationship with their god. The minute they begin to enforce a law on that country, that act goes into the realm of politics. It goes into the realm of the law of the land. That also violates our separation of church and state, the separation of mosque and state. The West doesn’t understand that under Shariah law, there is no separation of mosque and state. The mosque is the state and the state is the mosque. The West which prides itself on freedom and democracy, freedom of speech, equal rights for women and minorities, they have to understand that this is not a religious right. Muslims will say you are depriving them of their religious rights. No, you are not. This is political Islam. It has nothing to do with a personal relationship with God. It is about trying to control the country which they have immigrated to. America has fought so hard for women’s rights – are we going to start honor killings? There was an honor killing of two beautiful young girls in Texas by their father who was from Egypt, a taxi driver. He was not caught because he left the country. There are so many horrible laws. We must never think this is a religion because the duty of a religion is to protect you with rights. A religion doesn’t discriminate and torture and that is a violation of your rights, a violation of church and state.

A majority of Muslims are much like everyone else. What I am talking about is not the people – the problem is the law which discriminates and oppresses. There are so many oppressed people in the Muslim world. Look at the eyes of the people in the West Bank of Gaza or in Iraq or Egypt. The bottom line in every society is the law. Under Islamic Shariah law, the testimony of a woman is half that of a man. If a man and a woman go to court, guess who wins? This is what I am talking about – I’m not talking about the people, I’m talking about the law. If people don’t have justice under the law, they are living in a jungle. There are stocks and bonds sold from Islamic countries in American called Shariah finance. The profits from such financial deals go in the pockets of those Muslim countries. They use these profits to enforce Shariah law across Africa and other poor countries.

RT: Do most Muslims outside the political hierarchy understand and support Shariah law? Or would they like to see an end to it?

ND: There are some movements against Shariah, but they are calling them apostates and killing them. Unfortunately, under Islamic law, in all the books of Shariah, to deny Shariah is equal to denying Islam. The penalty is death. That is why there is no feminist movement in the Muslim world. I know two feminists in the Middle East, one in Egypt and one in Baharain. The one in Baharain was advocating divorce. She is now prevented from speaking or writing. The one in Egypt has a fatwah against her and had to leave the country because she could not protect herself.

RT: What do you think it would take to stop the encroachment of Islamic law into the West?

ND: The West must understand what Islamic law is without political correctness. The dictatorships in the Middle East are the creation of Shariah law. The only thing the West wants from the Middle East is an honest transaction of here is our dollars, give us your oil, but the Muslim world wants to blackmail the West to convert it to Islam. It is a very high price for oil.

RT: Why do you think non-Muslims, with all the information out there regarding Shariah law, are ignoring the warning signs?

ND: My book is the first book ever to explain Shariah. hariah books themselves are rarely translated into English and very few people want to go into the legal terminologies. I studied for one year to be able to explain Shariah in a way that it is understandable. I did a lot of quotations from Shariah and explained them. It is all documented. The West must wake up and start understanding because Shariah law says that for Muslims it is obligatory to lie if the purpose of the lie is the furtherance of Islam. Many Muslims don’t even know what Shariah law is exactly. They have lived under it for so many years.

RT: Do you believe that, under any circumstance, Shariah law and Western law can co-exist?

ND: No It is totally opposite and if we allow it among Muslims it is not going to end there.

RT: We have had several instances in the United States where Muslims sued their employers for prayer times during work hours, cab drivers refusing to carry passengers with alcohol….

ND: That is how they operate. You have women who want to cover their faces to get a driver’s license. You cannot bend the rules. The police must be able to look at your face and your license to identify you. So what do they want? They want to completely abolish our laws and put in their own laws. It doesn’t work this way.

RT: How does the “peaceful Muslim”, who says they don’t advocate the violent teaching of the Koran, reconcile their beliefs?

ND: I don’t understand. I personally cannot reconcile my beliefs, which is why I left Islam. It is very clear that Jews and Christians are infidels. The Koran has very derogatory words for them. Muslims are ordered not to talk to them, that they are filth. Some Muslims just do the five pillars of Islam – to pray and to fast… To them, that is their religion, which is very minimal and they are happy with those five pillars. They ignore 99% of their religion and only concentrate on the prayer. When something like 9/11 happens, they are silent because they know if they speak out against Jihad, they become apostates. That is why so many Americans are left wondering why are they silent. As much as they might be good people and citizens, they don’t commit crimes, by being silent against the tyranny of radical Islam, they are really feeding the monster. They are not standing up against it.

RT: What are your thoughts on the situation in Israel and what do you think Israel must do to stop Hamas?

ND: It is rooted in Shariah. Why is it an eternal problem for Muslims? Why do they want to destroy Israel? Many Muslims don’t want to tell you the truth. They don’t want to tell you it is their intention to destroy Israel completely. Jews have rooted themselves under Islam. Islamic law does not want them to govern themselves in the Middle East. Muslims these days don’t want to say it is their holy laws to totally eradicate Israel. They complain of occupation. Israel left Gaza. In response, Gaza took all their missiles to the border and started bombing Israel again. This is something the West doesn’t understand. At the end of every Friday prayer, I used to always hear that the Jews and the Christians must be destroyed. This is something we grew up hearing every day. It is such a radical system.

RT: Is there anything we haven’t touched on that you would add for our readers?

ND: The dynamic of the Muslim family, because of polygamy, is very different. Giving one man/one woman marriage has given them [women] respect and honor. If you start giving away the one man/one woman marriage in the West, we give away our future. The reason the Muslim world is so angry is because the Muslim marriage has no dignity and it humiliateswomen. A Muslim woman is so insecure in her marriage and there is no trust between the family members. That is why the Christian marriage and family unit is the most blessed thing America has.

RT: Thank you so much, Nonie, for your valuable insights into Shariah Law and how it threatens us right here in America, too. We are most grateful to you for your candor and courage.

ND: Thank you.

I'm With This Guy

I'm with this guy. I'll be spending the day doing my own thing and not watching any television coverage. I'm not interested. I'm not interesting in the offensive amount of money spent on this inauguration that the press and American public fawned over. The same press and American public that loudly cried foul at the 60% less that was spent for the Bush inauguration.

I'm not interested in a President that while still president elect staged his own theater choochoo ride. STAGED. THEATER. FAKE. ENTITLED.

(For the record. I do not stand with the opinions on abortion in the video here today. I hear the argument. I've heard the same argument and while the legislatures response was horribly weak it doesn't make the opposing argument correct. I'm not here to debate this issue at this time.)

Your Blog Is Fabulous

Olga The Traveling Bra thinks my Blog is Fabulous! Thanks. Sure is nice after some of the nastier things I've been called lately when I started to post current events and pro-Israel posts. But I digress.

Now according to the "rules" attached to this award
I'm 'supposed to list 5 things I'm addicted to...
So here goes:

  1. Telling my opinions and sharing FACTS on Israel.
  2. My computer and reading and posting on the Internet.
  3. For 13 years I was addicted to having my nails silk wrapped. For frugality purposes I have stopped but I HATE the way they look and feel and I am tempted to forgo food for my nails.
  4. Falling asleep to the television.
  5. My career.

I noticed that this award was passed on to a hanful of others. And so I'll also pass this one one as it's simple and fun.

I'm passing this award onto the following fantastic bloggers:

Response to "Medical Students' Letter of Solidarity with Gaza"

Recently the Lancet published a very anti-Israel letter from medical students up in Boston. The following letter is in response to that pubication's publishing of the letter.

I'm republishing that letter here today to stand for MY SIGNATURE to it, even though I am not an MD. If you support it's message please leave a comment and your name or your online name and send others who support it's message to this particular post to sign in the comments section as well. Response to "Medical Students' Letter of Solidarity with Gaza"

In a recently drafted letter, medical students in Boston implicate Israel in perpetrating a “disproportionate assault” that underlies the current humanitarian disaster in Gaza. While these doubtlessly well-intended individuals seek the moral high ground in calling for “an immediate cessation of hostilities,” they unfortunately ignore the realities of the situation. As fellow medical students, we would be utterly remiss if we did not attempt to provide a clearer picture of the reality in Gaza and address some of the troubling points of our colleagues in their “Medical Students' Letter of Solidarity with Gaza.” We believe that the invocation of an alleged “moral voice” in the face of a complex political situation without a full understanding of the facts is irresponsible and unprofessional.

A brief chronology of the latest saga of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is crucial to a proper appreciation of the issues involved in the current war. In August 2005, after five years of fighting in the Second Intifada with no resolution in sight, Israel unilaterally withdrew all of its soldiers and citizens from the Gaza strip in hopes of fostering a lasting peace. Since the Israeli withdrawal, however, Hamas, an internationally recognized terrorist organization funded by Iran, has fired over 6,000 deadly rockets from Gaza targeting Israeli civilians. It is against these war crimes, the indiscriminate targeting of innocent civilians, that the Israeli military has been forced to respond. As President-elect Obama asserted in a campaign visit to Israel in July 2008, "If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I would do everything to stop that, and would expect Israel to do the same thing." After years of restraint and after exhausting all diplomatic avenues, it is this very principle of defending its civilians, one of the foundational tenets of a democratic nation, which has driven Israel to take up arms against Hamas.

There is no question that the loss of Palestinian life in Gaza is terribly tragic and that every effort should be made to avoid civilian casualties and to provide medical aid and supplies to those suffering. While no party is blameless for the tragic Palestinian death toll, the stark contrast between Israel's and Hamas' treatment of the people in Gaza must be unequivocally asserted. Israel's defense of its own citizens has gone hand in hand with extraordinary efforts to protect the civilians of Gaza. Israel distributes leaflets, sends voicemails and text messages, and uses radio and TV announcements to warn Gazan civilians to clear areas of imminent attacks. Israel seeks to minimize civilian casualties through surgical strikes on military objectives, and frequently aborts key missions due to concerns for civilian casualties. Moreover, since the beginning of the war, Israel has transported thousands of pounds of food and medical supplies to ease the Gazans’ plight.

Unfortunately, Israel's efforts to minimize harm to the civilians of Gaza have been confounded by Hamas which consistently places civilians in the line of fire. Hamas, in clear violation of international law, gathers women and children around military targets to use them as human shields. This terrorist regime endangers the people of Gaza by using civilian homes, schools, mosques and hospitals as launching grounds for rockets fired at Israeli civilians and prides itself on the number of its own people martyred to the destruction of Israel. It preys on the moral conscience of the democratic world, which places a premium on innocent lives, knowing that Israel seeks to avoid killing the very same Palestinian civilians whom Hamas militants hide behind and deem dispensable. It is these abominable tactics of Hamas that leads to the "disproportionate" number of Palestinian civilian casualties and which should evoke international condemnation and outrage.

We recognize the hardships and painful losses incurred by both sides of this conflict, but we also know that simplistic solutions based on distorted facts are not the answer. Blind calls for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” outside the context of a viable and sustainable security are short-sighted. While this may seem to be an attractive and “humanitarian” solution in the short term, it will not alleviate the plight of Palestinians who suffer under the policies of the Hamas regime nor bring safety to the civilians of Israel who currently live in terror of Hamas rockets.

Every person should rightly be pained by the death and suffering of innocent people wherever they may be. Nonetheless, espousing moral indignation in the face of a skewed and one-sided picture of an immensely complex situation simply delays finding appropriate solutions. How can a letter that calls for humanitarianism and civilian protection point to Israel’s “brutal attacks” while ignoring the countless Israeli efforts to protect Gazan civilians? Why was it deemed irrelevant to mention the significant role of Hamas in the number of Palestinian civilian deaths? It pains us that some would attempt to value the lives and security of one people over the lives and security of another, and to express solidarity with some innocents while ignoring others. As medical students committed to the sanctity and preservation of human life, we too express our grave concern for the protection of innocents and hope for a speedy but viable resolution so that both Palestinians and Israelis can live in peace and safety.
