I saw a lot of media trucks and I thought that was a good thing for a change. Unfortunately I didn't see the protest I was looking for.
If you've ever been to NYC or live here you know how the subways can be on a Sunday. It took me a long time and three trains before I even arrived to find the protest gone.
So I walked toward Ground Zero hoping to find the group. I never found them but I did find another similar group protesting the building of the Park51 Mosque just around the corner from Ground Zero and I joined them.
Let me start by saying that to any baffoon who tries to say it's around the block and so what, blah blah...That area of the City is narrow, tiny and on top of each other. It may as well be the same block. And your argument is weak at best to begin with.
I found this group to be well meaning but a little disorganized. But the emotions were super high. For the first time in my life I heard NYers and some from NJ actually chanting IMPEACH OBAMA. Some used more foul language but after a short time that stopped. People are mad.
It was pouring but people were there and stayed. We bought umbrellas or stood under the overhangs and we stayed. Right there across the street from Ground Zero.
I met a young man of 33 who said he voted for Obama but truly regrets it now and won't ever vote for him again. We had a short conversation where he told me he just didn't know all these things about Obama at the time and he just listened to what was told on the media.
I had a few hecklers come by and try to start a problem with me over my sign but I know what to say. Basically I told them to ask Ayaan Hirsi Ali why she had to flee for her life and to ask her what is truly inflammatory and what is not.
I wrote at the top of that poster: Park51 is about Conquest.
Islam is a political ideology not a religion.

My internet connection won't let me watch the videos - too slow again today. I applaud your courage for attending this protest. I don't know what kind of media coverage you got, but I do know that if it happened here the media would be calling you 'intolerant' and 'racist' and the police would be moving you along fairly soon. I hope the mosque is not built there.
I just read something online - about the rest of the world just not getting it - what's all the fuss about? I'm so pissed off about what the media chooses to cover and what they don't. What about covering a bunch of Americans who stood out in the pouring rain because they remember what happened on September 11th, and who did it!?!
It's sad that it took THIS to get NYC to open its eyes 4- what you've been saying all along. I fear that it's too late.
Mum-me- thanks. It felt good to go. Let them call me racist. I know the truth.
Trencherbone, I posted your link on twitter. Thanks.
Bette Jo, the world is ignorant. They sat back and let the Germans mass murder an entire race - well at least attempt to, I'm still here -and they let Darfur happen in our lifetime and many other ethnic cleansings. It seems that it must be in their own faces before people wake up. We cannot afford that. It will be at our own peril if we do.
Aleta, I think those of us who have been silent have had enough after 9 years.
