Another Crane Collapses In NYC

AP Photo/via WABC TV

Just about an hour ago or less another crane collapsed in Manhattan. This time it is at 91st Street and First Avenue.

When I first moved to NYC I took a roomate rental on 92nd Street between first and second avenue. JUST AROUND THE BLOCK FROM THIS LOCATION.

I know someone who lives on first avenue about half a block from this accident.

They are saying that two people have been killed. Confirmed one person died. There are four people in the hospital that they could find so far. It looks like the crane was secured properly to the building and that the top of it toppled off. I guess this could have been worse. But what is going on with these cranes that so many are causing such devistating destruction?

Is the design of the modern crane such that they are faulty? Is it human error? WTF!!

It looks horrible.

I heard this topic talked about on the radio the other day. It does seem like more cranes are collapsing lately. Maybe it's time for a redesign.

Jessica, I heard Curtis Sliwa on WABC radio today saying that it used to be that they would build buildings AROUND the crane and now they attach it to the outside. Maybe they need to go back to the old way.

Carrie, ME EITHER.

I didn't know you lived in NYC. I have always wanted to visit there, it seems like such an exciting city (and I don't even like cities). I know...I know...I confuse myself sometimes.

Back to the post, that looks like a heck of a lot of damage and devastation. I'm surprised there weren't more casualties after seeing those pics. You should be able to feel safe when you go to work. That's terrible.

Gypsy, this is a residential part of Manhattan, the Upper East Side. There is so much construction going on in the city now that many people are really pissed off. It's too much and all about money. Not sure what it will take for the polititians to crack down on this though.

New York is a great place to live, fairly safe, safer than most suburbs in other states and safer than any other big city. If you ever visit let me know.
